Students achieve a learning goal only if......

Running on Bridge by DavidDennisPhotos.com, on Flickr

Students Achieve a learning goal only if :

they understand that goal and

can asses what they need to do to reach it.

These boys know their end goal, get to the other side of the bridge, and obviously they understand what they need to do to get there.

So often we think that the learning of our students falls on us as their teachers. But truly we should be showing our students what their end goal should be and give them the tools and information they need to get there.

How can we get our students to the point where they

are the driving force behind their own learning?

  1. I think having students working on live jobs is a way to make students responsible for their own learning. Taking on responsibility for a product outside the school setting is motivation to learn all they need to know to complete the task.

  2. I find that too often students want me to tell them what they need to do to be successful, they do not take responsibility for their learning. I often find that the grade 9's have a very hard time with independance, and maybe we should be spending more time teaching them how to reach their goals and be more responsible.
